Chanderi

Intro & History: Chanderi sarees originate from the historic town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh. The weaving tradition dates back to the 2nd–7th centuries, but it reached its zenith during the 13th century under Mughal patronage, especially during the rule of Sher Shah Suri and later emperors who prized its sheer elegance.

Significance & Work: Woven from a fine blend of silk and cotton on traditional pit looms, Chanderi is celebrated for its translucent texture, lightweight drape, and subtle sheen. Motifs β€” often geometric, floral, or inspired by local architecture β€” are created using supplementary warp/weft threads. The saree is prized for its versatility: breathable for everyday wear yet regal enough for special occasions. It represents Madhya Pradesh's royal textile legacy and is cherished for its understated luxury and timeless sophistication.
